On Saturday, 27th January 2018, the Roosevelt Movement UK will be presenting, at the Welcome Café in Erdington, the book – from an idea by Elena Remigi – that everyone is talking about, titled “In Limbo: Brexit Testimonies from EU citizens in the UK”. The best-seller is a collection of 157 powerful and moving human stories revolving around EU nationals and the uncertainty of their status resulted from the Brexit referendum.
The readings will show you the struggling of some of us – both Europeans citizens and Britons married to Europeans – with the bureaucracy, used deliberately as a tool to threaten the life of three million people; and the rise of xenophobia that unfortunately affected the country, due to a campaign that legitimated an abusive language and prevented us from the opportunity of having a honest and fruitful debate about the EU and about the consequences of leaving or remaining in the Union.
We missed this opportunity. But we are still on time to preserve our sense of humanity and to fight for the safeguarding of the rights of the people, of all of us.
We are individuals animated by an authentic European and international vision, although we do believe that nowadays Europe is under the threat of European technocrats who are trying to diminish both its appeal and power. We strongly believe that we need to give back a voice to all the peoples of Europe. Our mission becomes that of gathering, from any social, cultural and political background, those who share a progressive, democratic, social-liberal worldview.

Questa sera a Birmingham si parlerà di uomini e donne; di come la Brexit ha influito sulla loro vita, lasciandoli in un limbo, nell’incertezza. Questa sera discuteremo di come la politica non può essere fatta sulla base di false promesse o concetti astratti, ma deve tenere conto dell’impatto che le sue decisioni hanno sulla vita delle persone.
Sfortunatamente, i toni divisori della campagna referendaria hanno legittimato una deriva discriminatoria, quando non xenofobica. Inoltre, hanno fatto sì che abbiamo perso l’opportunità di iniziare una discussione il più sincera e spassionata possibile su cosa sia l’attuale e sulle reali conseguenze del lasciare l’Unione piuttosto che di rimanerci. Quell’opportunità allora è stata persa. Ma siamo ancora in tempo per riprenderla e per salvaguardare i diritti delle persone.
Siamo individui animati da una genuina visione europeista ed internazionale, ma sappiamo che oggi l’Europa è sotto la minaccia di tecnocrati. Crediamo fermamente che dobbiamo ridare voce ai popoli europei. La nostra missione è quella di radunare tutte le persone di ogni background sociale, politico e culturale che condividano una visione del mondo progressista e democratica.
